Ghana’s sports minister criticizes spending approach to African Games — MyJoyOnline

Ghana’s Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, said that the organization of the 2023 African Games was marked by a careless approach to spending and insufficient attention to the efficient use of funds. MyJoyOnline reports.

Adams addressed Ghana’s Parliament Public Accounts Committee, which is examining issues of spending and financial management related to the competition. According to him, it was difficult for him to review the figures concerning the staging of the Games. The minister called it a lesson for everyone managing public funds.

Approach to spending

The head of the sports ministry believes that the availability of money encouraged spending without proper assessment of its appropriateness. According to him, insufficient attention was paid to the ratio of spending to results during the African Games.

Adams also mentioned the sports complex in Borteyman, into which, according to him, significant public funds were invested as part of Ghana’s preparations for the Games. The minister said he had been informed that $146 million had been invested in the project. He also compared it with what was done at the University of Ghana and noted that these resources could have provided more opportunities.

African Games in Accra

The 2023 African Games were held in Accra from March 8 to 23. Their staging involved significant investment in sports infrastructure and logistics, including facilities in Borteyman and at the University of Ghana. Adams said this experience should encourage more careful use of public resources during future sporting events.
