Deutsche Bahn Suffered €34 Million in Losses Due to Vandalism — Spiegel
Last year, the German railway company Deutsche Bahn suffered losses of 34 million euros due to vandalism. This includes theft, graffiti, and damage to company property.
According to the Federal Ministry of Transport’s response to a written inquiry from the “Alternative for Germany” parliamentary group, 19.6 million euros of this amount was attributable to damage to infrastructure.
Losses from the theft of non-ferrous metals totaled 5.5 million euros, while the removal of graffiti from railway facilities cost 3.7 million euros. In addition, losses totaling 6.8 million euros were recorded under the general category of vandalism.
The cost of repairing vandalism in the intercity rail transport division amounted to approximately 2.25 million euros.
“There were 657 cases of graffiti and 220 cases of property damage on or inside vehicles,” the Ministry of Transportation reported.
Graffiti was mostly applied to the exterior surfaces of trains. “Property damage included, in particular, scratches on windows, stickers, and damage to the interior, such as seats,” the ministry noted.
Removing graffiti is also a significant expense for regional transportation.
According to the report, regional transportation incurred costs of approximately twelve million euros to address the consequences of vandalism. Most of these funds went toward removing graffiti.
