Diko did not guarantee support for Cyprus president in 2028 — Cyprus Mail
In Cyprus, Diko party leader Nikolas Papadopoulos said that the political force has not yet made a decision on possible support for President Nikos Christodoulides’ re-election campaign in 2028. He stressed that Diko does not give anyone unconditional support, Cyprus Mail reports.
The central committee will make the decision
According to Papadopoulos, the party’s position on the presidential election will be determined by its collective bodies, including the central committee, after the completion of an internal party dialogue. During the discussion, Diko will assess the government’s work, cooperation within it, and prospects for the next five years.
The Diko leader noted that the party also wants to hear Christodoulides’ own position — his intentions, vision, and proposals for the future five-year period. Any cooperation in the presidential election, he said, must be based on a specific programme, defined positions, and a shared vision for the coming years.

The party maintains its independence
Papadopoulos stressed that the decision cannot be made by one person, as party bodies, activists, and internal party dialogue must be respected. He added that Diko positively assesses the implementation of the government programme and believes that the party has made a significant contribution to its formation and implementation.
At the same time, the politician declined to speak about the sentiments of ordinary Diko members. According to him, district conferences are currently analysing the political situation, the government’s work, and the prospects of the party and the country. Papadopoulos also said that Diko maintains its independence from the government, although its role in it has increased, as the party is the only parliamentary force in the government.
Diko supported Christodoulides in the 2023 presidential election. Asked about possible simultaneous support for the incumbent president by Diko and Elam in 2028, Papadopoulos replied that hypothetical scenarios should not be discussed before candidates are announced.
