Ghana MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah granted 50m cedi bail — MyJoyOnline

In Ghana, Member of Parliament for Manhyia South Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah was granted bail of 50 million Ghanaian cedis with three sureties after appearing before the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). This was reported by MyJoyOnline.

Awuah, who is also the vice-chairman of Parliament’s Committee on Subsidiary Legislation, voluntarily appeared at the EOCO office at around 10:00 on Thursday, October 1, to assist investigators as part of an ongoing probe.

Warrant and subject of the investigation

Earlier, the High Court in Accra issued an arrest warrant for the MP. EOCO told the court that previous attempts to secure his appearance for questioning had not produced the desired result.

The investigation concerns suspicions of criminal conspiracy, causing financial loss to SIC Savings and Loans, money laundering, tax offences and other possible violations. Awuah denied claims that he received 2.2 million cedis as legal fees and also challenged EOCO’s account of previous attempts to secure his appearance.

EOCO stated that the investigation is ongoing and urged the public not to draw conclusions about the MP’s guilt before investigative and judicial procedures are completed.

Statement by the minority leader

Against the backdrop of this case, parliamentary Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin called on EOCO to more actively identify and prosecute people who, he said, finance and coordinate Ghana-linked drug trafficking operations.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, October 1, the Effutu MP questioned the agency’s focus on arrests and investigations of opposition politicians. He urged EOCO also to identify the financiers and organisers of Ghana-linked drug trafficking networks.
