Four German Eurofighter jets arrive in Latvia — LSM English

Four German Air Force Eurofighter jets arrived at Lielvārde Air Base in Latvia on September 24. The aircraft will temporarily strengthen the protection of the country’s airspace, LSM English reports, citing Latvia’s Ministry of Defence.

Tasks of the aircraft

The German Eurofighters will remain in Latvia for a short period. They will carry out missions supporting the activities of NATO’s integrated air and missile defence system.

The deployment of the fighter jets is also intended to test NATO’s ability to rapidly deploy and receive allied forces, as well as Lielvārde Air Base’s readiness to receive and support the air forces of Alliance member states.

Strengthening the allied presence

At the initiative of Latvian Defence Minister Raivis Melnis, Germany, Italy, and Türkiye will increase the presence of their air forces to strengthen the protection of Latvian skies during the elections to the 15th Saeima.

Latvia’s Ministry of Defence noted that drones have repeatedly entered the airspace of the Baltic states in recent months. It linked such incidents to the security situation caused by the war of the Russian Federation — an aggressor state — against Ukraine. Latvia’s Armed Forces, together with NATO allies, continuously monitor the country’s airspace and maintain readiness to respond to potential threats.
