U.S. President Donald Trump has called on the citizens of Hungary to support incumbent Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in the parliamentary elections scheduled for April 12, 2026.
The American leader published his statement on the social media platform Truth Social.
In effect, he launched a public campaign in support of Orbán. Trump called him a “true fighter” and a “winner,” highlighting his leadership qualities.
Among the key arguments in favor of the Hungarian prime minister, he highlighted:
- Strong leadership — Orbán, in his words, is a “powerful leader with proven experience” who consistently defends the country’s interests.
- Shared priorities — Trump emphasized that the Hungarian prime minister is actively combating illegal migration, strengthening borders, and ensuring “law and order.”
- Economic cooperation — According to him, under Orbán, bilateral relations between the U.S. and Hungary have reached a “new level,” which has contributed to trade growth and job creation.
In his address, he urged voters:
“Hungary! Get out and vote for Viktor Orbán. He is a true friend, a fighter, and a winner... He will never let down the great people of Hungary. I’m with him all the way!”
Trump’s support came amid the rising popularity of opposition politician Péter Magyar, who poses a serious challenge to the current government.
The statement also came amid discussions within the EU regarding Budapest’s stance on support for Ukraine.
Despite trailing the opposition Tisza party in the polls, a significant portion of Hungarians still believe that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party will win the April 12 election.
Meanwhile, Péter Magyar, leader of the Hungarian opposition party Tisza, stated that if his party wins the April 12 parliamentary elections, he plans to remove key allies of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán from power, including the president and heads of the judiciary.
