EFCC forms team over Mambilla project in Nigeria — Premium Times Nigeria
In Nigeria, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), according to Premium Times Nigeria, has formed a team to examine individuals mentioned in cases surrounding the Mambilla hydropower project. Sources told the publication that it is headed by EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede.
Arbitration ruling
The report emerged after a ruling by an international arbitration tribunal at the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris in Nigeria's favor. The tribunal dismissed Sunrise Power and Transmission Company Ltd's claim for a $680 million payment in a settlement dispute. The company is also pursuing another arbitration proceeding in which it seeks more than $2.7 billion in compensation and interest.
The dispute is connected to the development of the 3,960 MW Mambilla hydropower project in Taraba State. The arbitration ordered Sunrise and its promoter, Leno Adesanya, to reimburse Nigeria $11.8 million in legal costs. The tribunal also dismissed a $400 million recovery claim, which included $200 million for the settlement amount and $200 million as a penalty amount.

Individuals mentioned in the ruling
According to the publication, the tribunal's ruling mentions former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar, his former wife Jennifer Douglas, former Attorney General Abubakar Malami, former Minister of Power and Steel Olu Agunloye, former National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki, his son Abubakar Dasuki, as well as Abdullahi Yola and Dere Awosika.
The tribunal specifically examined a $500,000 transfer that Adesanya made on January 30, 2003, to Douglas's account in the United States. Adesanya explained it as a foreign exchange transaction for Abubakar, but the tribunal noted that the explanation was not supported by documents. Abubakar denied that the arbitration had accused him and said that he was not responsible for concluding the contract with Sunrise.
Premium Times Nigeria sources said that the EFCC may summon Abubakar and Douglas for questioning in the coming days or weeks. Commission spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed to the publication that he was aware of developments in the case but had not received full information about the details.
