Former FBI Director Accused of Threatening Trump's Life Over Photo of Bullets
Former FBI Director James Comey has been charged over a photograph of seashells that, according to officials, contained a threat against U.S. President Donald Trump. This marks the administration’s second attempt to hold one of the head of state’s key political opponents accountable.
CNN reported this.
According to court documents, the charges, approved by a grand jury in the Eastern District of North Carolina, include making a threat against the president and transmitting a threat in interstate commerce. Comey himself commented on the situation as follows: “I am still innocent. I am still not afraid. And I still believe in an independent federal judicial system, so let’s get started.”
“The new case is evidence of a resurgence in efforts to meet Trump’s demands for an investigation into his own enemies, particularly Comey, whom he considers a key figure in attempts to ‘abuse’ the justice system against him. This also comes less than a month after the president fired Attorney General Pam Bondi. For several weeks, Trump had complained that Bondi was not aggressively enough pursuing his agenda,” CNN reports.

The April 28 indictment relates to a photo that Comey posted on social media last May. The image showed seashells on a beach arranged to form the numbers “8647.”
In the caption, he wrote: “Cool formation of shells during my walk on the beach.”
Almost immediately after the post, Republicans and government officials criticized Comey, claiming it could be a veiled threat. In slang, the number 86 sometimes means removal or ousting, while Trump is currently the 47th president of the United States.
That same day, Comey deleted his post.
Then-Secretary of Homeland Security Kirsty Noem stated that the Secret Service would investigate Comey because, in her words, he had called for Trump’s “murder.”
At James Comey’s hearing in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, Judge Michael Nahmanoff posed numerous questions to the prosecutors defending the charges, while highlighting the origins of the Trump team’s diplomatic defense, which clearly expose the political nature of the prosecution. Comey’s attorney, Michael Drieber, argues that the president’s public statements that “justice must be restored” are an attempt to use the legal system for political reprisals.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump stated that his administration would begin prosecuting more political opponents after the U.S. Department of Justice filed criminal charges against former FBI Director James Comey. The president did not specify who the next target would be, but emphasized that “there will be others,” sending a sharp signal to his critics.
