Former MEP files complaint in Greece against NSO Group over Pegasus — Anadolu Agency

Greek journalist and former Member of the European Parliament Stelios Kouloglou has filed a criminal complaint with the Athens prosecutor's office against officials of the Israeli company NSO Group, which develops spyware. He claims that his phone was infected with Pegasus while he was serving on a European Parliament committee investigating the use of surveillance software, Anadolu Agency reports.

Forensic findings

According to Kouloglou, a forensic examination by Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto found that his phone was infected around October 21, 2022, as well as on March 6 and 7, 2023.

During that period, Kouloglou was a substitute member of the European Parliament committee that was examining the use of Pegasus, Predator and similar spyware. The complaint states that the alleged infections coincided with important stages of the committee's work.

Contents of the complaint

The former MEP said that the spyware could have given those responsible access to communications, contacts, documents, location data and information related to his political activities.

The complaint seeks an investigation into alleged violations of the secrecy of communications, unauthorized access to data and personal data protection legislation. After filing it, Kouloglou expressed hope that the Greek prosecutor's office would investigate the case. His lawyer, Zacharias Kesses, said that no action had previously been taken regarding these claims, although they had already been known.
