The EU is preparing for a prolonged energy crisis due to the war in the Middle East
The European Union is considering scenarios for responding to a potential prolonged energy crisis caused by the war in the Middle East. Options include implementing fuel rationing and tapping into strategic oil reserves.
This was stated by European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jørgensen in an interview with the Financial Times.
According to him, the EU is analyzing “all possible options” to prepare for a protracted crisis in energy markets. This includes, in particular, potential fuel rationing, as well as the release of additional oil volumes from emergency reserves.
“This will be a prolonged crisis… energy prices will remain high for a very long time,” Jørgensen emphasized.
He also warned that the situation with certain, most critical resources could worsen in the coming weeks. According to European Commission estimates, markets will remain volatile, and pressure on prices will persist in the medium term.
As a reminder, the Czech government is introducing new measures to curb fuel costs.
Meanwhile, the Cabinet of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has begun work on extending the reduced fuel tax.
