EU Pledges €620m for Syria Recovery and Urges Dialogue in Aleppo
The European Union will provide Syria with around €620 million in financial assistance over this year and the next, aimed at post-war recovery, bilateral support and humanitarian aid.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made the announcement during a visit to Damascus, saying the scale of destruction across the country remains immense after years of conflict.
She added that the EU intends to begin talks on reviving a cooperation agreement with Syria and to launch a new political partnership. This would include high-level discussions planned for the first half of 2026.
Von der Leyen also voiced concern over the recent escalation of violence in the northern city of Aleppo, where clashes have taken place between government forces and Kurdish fighters. She stressed that continued and inclusive dialogue between all parties is urgently needed to prevent further instability.
