The EU has imposed sanctions against a Russian knockoff of Starlink

As part of its 21st sanctions package, the European Union has imposed restrictions on a Russian project being developed as an alternative to the U.S. Starlink satellite system. 

A European official announced this at a briefing in Brussels, noting that this decision is a particularly important step in curbing Russia’s technological capabilities.

In addition to satellite communications, the European Union has significantly changed its approach to restrictions in the field of defense production. This time, the sanctions covered the entire supply chain and production of Russia’s “Harpy” long-range drones, resulting in more than 30 related entities being subject to restrictions simultaneously. Additionally, more than 20 organizations and individuals involved in the Russian military-industrial complex have been subject to further personal sanctions and restrictions.

A separate set of new measures targets individuals responsible for spreading Russian military propaganda, particularly through manipulative tactics in the sports sector. In addition, the EU has expanded sanctions to include new actors, traders, and companies in the gold and diamond trade sectors, which last year generated 12 billion and over 2 billion dollars in revenue for the Russian budget, respectively.

The European Union has approved its 21st package of sanctions against Russia in response to its aggression against Ukraine. The new restrictions target the financial sector, the energy sector, the military-industrial complex, the shadow fleet, and schemes to circumvent sanctions.

Earlier, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry called for tougher sanctions following Russia’s attack on a tanker near Romania.

The EU will impose sanctions against Belarusian oil refineries for supplying gasoline to Russia.
