Greece has recommended that ships step up security measures in the Black Sea
The Greek Ministry of Shipping has issued an official recommendation to commercial vessels flying the Greek flag to strengthen security measures while sailing in the Black Sea. This decision was made in light of a series of serious attacks on tankers that have occurred in recent days.
Ships operated by Greek companies make up one of the largest tanker fleets in the world and play a key role in logistics and trade in the Black Sea region. In recent weeks, tensions have escalated again, as Ukraine and Russia have intensified attacks on ships and infrastructure in the Black and Azov Seas as part of their conflict.
The warning was prompted by a series of dangerous incidents. In particular, on Sunday, a Russian missile struck a bulk carrier carrying corn near the port of Odesa, killing 10 people. On the same day, two tankers operated by Greek companies were attacked by maritime drones near the terminal of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium—a 1,510-kilometer-long oil pipeline connecting fields in Kazakhstan to the port of Novorossiysk, through which approximately 80% of Kazakhstan’s oil exports are transported. In addition, according to a statement from the ministry dated July 21, another vessel—the third owned by Greek companies—was attacked in the same area.
In light of rising tensions and the risk of direct attacks, the Greek Ministry of Shipping strongly urges all Greek vessels in the region to maximize their security measures.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs summoned Vladimir Ladanov, the Russian chargé d’affaires, expressing its “unequivocal condemnation” of the Russian strike on the civilian dry cargo ship MV Golden Leo near the port of Odesa. Ten people were killed in the attack, including four Indian sailors and a Ukrainian pilot.
Ukraine’s Ministry of Community and Territorial Development emphasized that such attacks pose a danger to international shipping, undermine the stability of global trade, and threaten global food security.
