EU Says Maduro ‘Lacks Legitimacy’ and Calls for Restraint in Venezuela
European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas says the bloc is closely monitoring developments in Venezuela and has called for restraint from all sides. In a statement, she said she had spoken with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the EU’s ambassador in Caracas.
Kallas reiterated that the EU has repeatedly stated that President Nicolás Maduro “lacks legitimacy” and supports a peaceful political transition. She also stressed that, under all circumstances, the principles of international law and the UN Charter must be respected.
She added that the safety of EU citizens in Venezuela remains the bloc’s “top priority,” as the EU continues to assess the situation in coordination with international partners.
