Europe is preparing another 70 billion euros for Ukraine
European NATO member countries plan to allocate an additional 70 billion euros to Ukraine in 2026–2027. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made this announcement, noting that Berlin is seeking to reach such an agreement.
According to Merz, Russia’s war against Ukraine will be one of the main topics at the NATO summit in Ankara. He also expressed hope that the allies will remain united and increase pressure on the Kremlin.
Before departing for the NATO summit in Ankara, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that European allies are preparing a new large-scale financial aid package for Ukraine. He said that, at Germany’s initiative, NATO member states plan to agree to allocate an additional 70 billion euros over the course of 2026 and 2027. “Based on a German initiative, an agreement is to be reached on providing Ukraine with new additional funds. In 2026 and 2027, European allies will provide another 70 billion euros,” Merz said.
The chancellor emphasized that Russia’s war against Ukraine will be one of the key topics at the NATO summit. He hopes that the meeting in Ankara will help strengthen the unity of the allies and mark a new phase in support for Ukraine. “I would like for us to succeed together in rekindling the spirit of Ankara. This summit must send the following message: we are building a more European NATO so that NATO can remain transatlantic,” he said.
Merz also expressed the view that the upcoming summit could mark a turning point in the war. “The Kremlin must gradually come to realize that Russia will not be able to win this war and will not achieve its military objectives,” the chancellor emphasized.
He also mentioned the G7 summit in Evian, where, he said, the leaders of the participating countries, together with U.S. President Donald Trump, called on Moscow to end the war. “We also want to try to strengthen the unity we were able to achieve at the G7 summit in Evian. There, together with President Trump, we very clearly demanded that Moscow end this war. It’s up to Moscow. That is our shared conviction,” Merz said.
The chancellor added that Russia remains one of the main threats to European security. According to him, the Kremlin tests the resolve of Western countries on a daily basis through cyberattacks, sabotage, espionage attempts, and disinformation campaigns. “Russia remains a serious threat. Every day, Moscow tests our resolve with cyberattacks, sabotage, espionage attempts, and targeted disinformation,” the German chancellor concluded. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made this statement to reporters before departing for the NATO summit in Ankara.
