Evacuations have been ordered in British Columbia due to rapidly spreading wildfires

In the Summerland area of the Canadian province of British Columbia, an evacuation order was issued due to the Bald Range wildfire, which remains out of control. A state of emergency was declared there on Saturday morning, and thousands of people were forced to leave their homes, according to Al Jazeera English.

According to the 2021 census, about 12,000 people live in the area. On Saturday, local authorities reported a power outage due to the fire and advised residents to boil their water.

According to the provincial agency Emergency Info BC, Saturday’s evacuation orders apply to the Peachland watershed, the Brenda Mines area, Lower Princeton, and central Princeton. All residents of these areas were urged to be prepared to leave immediately.

Canadian MP Amelia Bultby, who represents Penticton–Summerland, stated that firefighters and emergency services are doing extremely important work. She also expressed her support for those evacuated and for the volunteers.

According to Al Jazeera English, approximately 1,500 firefighters have been deployed in British Columbia. The province has issued 39 evacuation orders and 49 warnings. Firefighting teams from Mexico, Australia, France, and New Zealand are providing assistance to Canada.

British Columbia Premier David Eby stated that the province has sufficient resources to combat the fires, including additional firefighters and aircraft. He urged residents to follow official updates and evacuate immediately if ordered to do so, as conditions are changing rapidly.

This summer, large wildfires have also swept through other Canadian provinces, including Ontario and Quebec. Scientists note that climate change in recent decades has exacerbated conditions conducive to such fires due to periods of severe drought and heat.
