Fico called on the EU to engage in dialogue with Russia following the drone strike on Romania
Prime Minister Robert Fico expressed Slovakia’s solidarity with Romania following a Russian drone strike on Romanian territory. At the same time, he called on international partners to avoid escalation and “inflammatory statements.”
This is reported by The Guardian.
According to the Slovak prime minister, the situation is dangerous, so it is necessary to act with restraint.
“We must avoid an escalation that we may not be able to handle,” Fico emphasized.
The head of the Slovak government also called for the prompt initiation of dialogue between the European Union and Russia.
Fico’s statement came amid an international reaction to the incident involving a Russian drone that struck a residential building in Romania. Earlier, a number of European leaders condemned Russia’s actions and called for increased support for Ukraine and NATO’s eastern flank.
The United States responded to the incident in the Romanian city of Galați, where a Russian drone struck a high-rise building. Washington condemned the violation of Romanian airspace and the strike on a civilian target, calling it an unacceptable escalation.
Romania explained why it did not intercept the Russian drone that struck the building.
During the Russian strike on the Odesa region on April 25, Russian drones were moving along the border with Romania. British aircraft patrolling Romanian airspace tracked their routes. Later, drone debris was found in border areas of Romania.
The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian ambassador over the incident involving a drone crash near the city of Galați.
