Von der Leyen spoke with Koretsky about energy and EU accession
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen held a telephone conversation with Ukraine’s newly appointed Prime Minister Serhiy Koretsky. The two discussed preparations for winter, support for Ukraine’s energy sector, cooperation in drone production, and Ukraine’s continued progress toward EU membership. Officials in Brussels assured that Ukraine can continue to count on the European Union’s support.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reported on her phone call with Ukraine’s new Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi. According to the head of the European Commission, the conversation was productive. One of the main topics was the continuation of the reforms necessary for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. “A very fruitful phone conversation with Koretsky. We will continue to work closely together on reforms that advance Ukraine’s EU accession process,” Ursula von der Leyen noted.
Separately, the parties discussed cooperation in the defense sector. They addressed an agreement on drone production, which, according to the European Commission President, will help accelerate the production of modern equipment for the Ukrainian army. “The drone agreement will allow us to harness the EU’s industrial potential for the rapid and large-scale production of the most innovative defense equipment for Ukraine,” she emphasized.
Another important topic was Ukraine’s preparations for the upcoming heating season. The interlocutors discussed the state of critical energy infrastructure and continued support for the energy sector. Von der Leyen assured that the European Union would continue to assist Ukraine, particularly in strengthening the energy system and improving the management of this sector. “We also discussed preparations for winter and issues related to critical energy infrastructure. You can count on our full support, particularly in your efforts to improve the management of the energy sector,” said the President of the European Commission.
The phone call was one of Serhiy Koretskyi’s first official contacts as Prime Minister of Ukraine with European Union leadership. Brussels once again confirmed that it will support Ukraine both in implementing reforms and in matters of security, energy recovery, and the country’s preparations for winter. She posted about the results of the talks on social media platform X.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will visit Kyiv on Wednesday, July 15. During the trip, meetings and discussions are planned regarding the European Union’s continued support for Ukraine.
