Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation supports training of public leaders in Nigeria — Premium Times Nigeria

In Nigeria, the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation supports the training of future public-sector leaders, including through scholarships to study at the Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford and a leadership development programme for officials. Adedotun Eyinade wrote about this in a column for Premium Times Nigeria.

Support for studying at Oxford

Eyinade said that in 2016 he received an offer to study for a Master of Public Policy degree at Oxford. Tuition at the time was £40,000, excluding living expenses.

According to the author, in July that year the university awarded him a full tuition scholarship. The Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation agreed to fully cover the shortfall in living expenses and, in return, asked him to complete an internship focused on Nigeria.

Eyinade noted that another 35 citizens of Nigeria and Ghana studied alongside him in the competitive Master of Public Policy programme. Recipients of AIG MPP scholarships, he said, now work in the public sector and development field in both countries.

Competitive selection and leadership programme

As Eyinade writes, applicants for the AIG scholarship undergo a competitive selection process even before applying to the University of Oxford. In September 2016, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede told the author that, after reading his letter, he had decided to make the selection of scholarship recipients rigorous and impartial.

The foundation is also developing the AIG Public Leaders Programme, a management skills development programme for public-sector leaders. It was launched in 2021; the fifth cohort is currently underway, and the programme has trained more than 300 public-sector leaders in total.

The column's author links these initiatives to Aig-Imoukhuede's belief that, for change in Africa, the public sector must be renewed and staffed by the most competent professionals.
