Ghana plans to expand port infrastructure — MyJoyOnline

In Ghana, the government has presented plans to expand port infrastructure in order to reduce congestion and strengthen the country’s role as a maritime and logistics hub for West Africa. MyJoyOnline reports.

Capacity and transport links

The plans include increasing port capacity, building a new berth, improving road connections, and developing rail links for freight transportation.

The initiatives were announced during the observance of World Maritime Day under the theme “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence.” Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe said that the authorities are taking measures to expand port capacity and improve connectivity to and from the ports.

Hydrography and regulation

According to the minister, Ghana also plans to strengthen its maritime capabilities by establishing hydrographic capacity to support navigation and local production of nautical charts.

The Director General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority called for stronger enforcement of policies and regulations to improve the efficiency of the maritime sector. His speech was delivered by General Manager for Risk David Songotu. He noted that parliament had passed a bill on offences related to maritime activity, while work is also ongoing on legislation to regulate inland water transport.

According to the publication, these steps are part of broader efforts to put maritime policy into practice and improve safety, efficiency, and the quality of regulation in the sector.
