UN experts warn of risks to migrants from US arrangements — Anadolu Agency
In Geneva, Switzerland, UN experts said that United States arrangements to transfer migrants and asylum seekers to third countries create heightened risks of human rights violations, including torture and persecution. As Anadolu Agency reports, according to the experts, Washington has already transferred at least 23,000 third-country nationals to 29 countries and territories.
Risks for asylum seekers
According to the experts’ assessment, these arrangements concern asylum seekers and migrants at different stages of immigration procedures. They warned of risks of torture, ill-treatment, enforced disappearances, and violations of the principle of non-refoulement, which prohibits returning people to places where they face serious harm.
The experts also said that migrants may face arbitrary detention, a lack of legal assistance and due process, family separation, human trafficking, homelessness, and insufficient access to healthcare.

Call to end the arrangements
According to the UN experts, they sent communications to the US government and the governments of all countries with which Washington had concluded such arrangements as of June 2026. In total, this involves 35 countries and territories.
They stressed that states cannot evade their obligations under international law through such agreements, and that the principle of non-refoulement must apply at every stage of transferring people. The experts called on all involved states and territories to immediately end these mechanisms and restore access to fair and effective asylum procedures.
