Student protests in France escalate into clashes with police — RMF24

In France, students, teachers and parents took to the streets of cities demanding better conditions in schools. In Lyon and Strasbourg, demonstrations escalated into clashes with police, while in Vincennes, a suburb of Paris, law enforcement used tear gas, RMF24 reports.

Demonstrations spread to several cities

Actions took place in Marseille, Nantes, Lyon, Paris and other cities. Protesters carried placards, including ones referring to young people's anger and politicians' lack of attention to their problems. According to the outlet, the current demonstrations were a continuation of protests that began in the suburbs of Paris and spread across the country.

In Lyon and Strasbourg, black smoke was visible in the streets during the clashes. In Vincennes, a peaceful action took place in the morning, with participants forming a human chain. Police tried to push people back to unblock traffic, but failed to do so, after which law enforcement used tear gas.

Injuries and detentions

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said that the police use of coercive measures was justified and proportionate. These include, in particular, flash-bang grenades and launchers for rubber bullets.

During clashes on Monday in northern France, a 15-year-old student lost a hand and part of his forearm after picking up a police flash-bang grenade. The prefect of the Pas-de-Calais department did not comment on the details of the incident, noting that a group of protesters had thrown objects at police officers.

According to the French Interior Ministry, 6,100 people have been detained since the start of the protests, most of them minors. The ministry also reported more than 1,800 criminal proceedings. At least 715 police officers and 215 teenagers were injured in the clashes. The government is deploying units to maintain order and moving some classes to a remote format.
