France prepares UN resolution on Strait of Hormuz — Asharq Al-Awsat

In New York, United States, France is working on a draft UN Security Council resolution in support of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. A UN diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the closed nature of the discussions, told Asharq Al-Awsat.

What the draft provides for

According to the diplomat, the document is to reaffirm the need to respect freedom of navigation in the strait and emphasize its importance for global supplies vital to food and energy security. The draft is also to recall the need to comply with maritime law and support peaceful initiatives aimed at ensuring the safe passage of vessels.

The report notes that before the war, one-fifth of global oil and gas trade passed through the Strait of Hormuz. Disruption to navigation in these waters has become one of Iran's main levers of influence.

Macron and Trump talks

The new French initiative emerged after talks between French President Emmanuel Macron and US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. The diplomat said the issue was also discussed with Arab countries and Iran.

After the meeting with Trump at Trump Tower in New York, Macron said they had discussed several options. According to him, in the coming hours the sides will work on diplomatic solutions that, even without a comprehensive agreement, could allow more container ships and oil tankers to pass through the strait.

Paris had already tried to prepare a resolution on this issue, but previous attempts were unsuccessful.
