The FSB reported that a gas tanker from Belgium had been booby-trapped at a port near St. Petersburg

Russian authorities have claimed to have foiled a terrorist attack at the port of Ust-Luga in the Leningrad Region, where explosive devices were allegedly discovered on a gas tanker that had arrived from Belgium.

This was reported by Russian government agencies.

According to the FSB, the vessel Arrhenius arrived in Russia on May 20 from the Belgian port of Antwerp and, after stopping in Ust-Luga, was supposed to proceed to Samsun, Turkey.

The security service claims that during an inspection, devices resembling marine magnetic mines were allegedly found under the ship’s hull. The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation stated that the explosives could have been manufactured in one of the NATO countries.

According to the Russian side, each device contained about 7 kilograms of plastic explosive.

Russia also stated that the ship’s captain reported that the gas carrier had been anchored near Antwerp before entering the Russian port.

Following the incident, Russian law enforcement opened a criminal case under articles regarding attempted terrorism and the illegal trafficking of explosive devices.
