Poland's Defense Minister stated that Ukraine will not join the EU with Bandera on its flag
Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated on July 26 that Ukraine would not be able to join the European Union with symbols that, in his view, contradict the historical memory of some European countries.
In an interview with the Polish publication Wirtualna Polska, he stated that the issue of historical policy is important in Ukraine’s European integration process.
“This is a very clear-cut issue—you cannot build a European community on a history that is foreign to that community,” Kosiniak-Kamysz said.
The Polish official also stated that “Ukraine will not join the European Union with Bandera on its flag.” He was likely referring to the attitude of some segments of Polish society toward the figure of Stepan Bandera and the historical events of World War II.
As a reminder, a Ukrainian couple was brutally beaten in Wrocław, Poland. According to the victim’s mother, the attack occurred after the assailants heard Ukrainian being spoken in a store. Both victims sustained serious injuries; medical professionals suspect they may have suffered concussions.
Polish police stated that the attack on the Ukrainians in Wrocław may have been ethnically motivated.
The Ukrainian Consulate has asked Polish authorities to urgently locate the attackers who assaulted the Ukrainians in Wrocław.
