Lebanese foreign minister urges Britain to pressure Israel — Anadolu Agency

Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Raggi, during a phone call with British Minister of State for the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan and Pakistan Stephen Doughty, urged the United Kingdom to pressure Israel to halt attacks on Lebanese territory. This was reported by Anadolu Agency, citing the media office of Lebanon’s foreign minister.

Conversation with the British minister

According to Raggi’s office, Doughty reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s steadfast and continued support for Lebanon. The ministers also discussed the situation in Lebanon and the region, as well as the period following the end of the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, UNIFIL.

Raggi informed the British official about progress in establishing the state’s exclusive control over weapons, without providing details. At the end of the conversation, the Lebanese minister invited Doughty to visit Lebanon, and the British official promised to accept the invitation at the first opportunity.

Arrangements with Israel

UNIFIL’s mandate expires at the end of 2026. The UN force has been deployed in Lebanon since 1978 under UN Security Council resolutions to monitor the cessation of hostilities and maintain security and stability in the area.

On the same day, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said at a preparatory meeting in Paris ahead of an international conference in support of the Lebanese army and Internal Security Forces that it is impossible to complete the implementation of arrangements with Israel and strengthen stability as long as Israeli attacks, violations and the occupation of parts of Lebanese territory continue.

On June 26, Lebanon and Israel signed a U.S.-backed framework formula in Washington that provides for the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory and the deployment of the Lebanese army in areas from which Israeli troops withdraw. According to Anadolu Agency, Israel continues to carry out strikes in southern Lebanon and holds certain areas in the south of the country.
