Tomoko Akane, President of the International Criminal Court, stated her readiness to defend the court’s work and resist pressure from the United States following the imposition of U.S. sanctions against her.
“ICC President Tomoko Akane vowed on Wednesday to resist U.S. sanctions against her and to defend the Court in The Hague amid mounting pressure from Washington,” the report states.
“I have no grounds for being subject to U.S. sanctions. I will resist any negative consequences,” Akane said during an online press conference.
It is noted that the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has taken a hostile stance toward the ICC due to its investigations, particularly regarding alleged war crimes committed by American military personnel.
Noting that the U.S. has also imposed sanctions directly against the court, Akane emphasized that “the ICC cannot be dismantled.”
She called on the Court’s member states, particularly Japan, to support its work.
