The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 26, but it has only now been made public. According to police, a drone was detected near Leipzig Airport. Following this, two planes were diverted from the airport, including a passenger flight.
It later turned out that the unidentified aircraft was a privately owned drone that posed no threat to airport security. The drone was supposed to be recording repair work on a building in Großkugel, a village located in the immediate vicinity of the airport.
Private drones near airports are not uncommon. According to the German Air Traffic Control Service, such incidents occur regularly. This year, six drones have already disrupted air traffic in Leipzig, and five in Dresden.
