El Niño may intensify climate extremes in Europe
The combination of the natural El Niño phenomenon and climate change may intensify dangerous weather events in Europe. Gareth Redmond-King, head of the international Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit programme, stated this in an interview with France 24.

According to Redmond-King, climate change not only intensifies extreme weather events but also makes the climate system less stable. Against this backdrop, natural phenomena, including El Niño, may amplify such disruptions.

The expert compared this effect to “fanning the flames of climate change.” In his view, this may make dangerous extreme events even more severe.
A new norm for Europe
For Europe, this means that extreme heat, droughts, water shortages, storms and flash floods should increasingly not be regarded as exceptional phenomena. Redmond-King believes they are becoming part of a new norm for which governments, in his assessment, remain insufficiently prepared.
