Hong Kong ranks 14th in Global Innovation Index 2026 — ECNS

Hong Kong, China, rose to 14th place among 139 economies in the 2026 Global Innovation Index published by the World Intellectual Property Organization. The city ranked fifth among Asian economies, ECNS reports.

Positions by index components

In terms of innovation inputs, Hong Kong remained eighth in the world. At the same time, it rose by one position in innovation outputs, to 21st place.

The city ranked second in the world for market sophistication and first for credit. Its positions in such components as human capital and research, institutions, and infrastructure rose to sixth, seventh, and 11th places respectively.

Investment and further initiatives

Expenditure on research and development, the total number of researchers, and the number of patent applications in Hong Kong also continued to grow. Representatives of the special administrative region's authorities said they would continue developing the city as an international innovation and technology hub in coordination with national technology strategies.

Future priorities include expanding the use of artificial intelligence, developing computing infrastructure, and deepening integration within the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area.
