Japan called cooperation among the U.S., South Korea, and their allies "critical"
Japan emphasized the importance of cooperation among the United States, South Korea, and their allies following U.S. President Donald Trump’s order to significantly scale back joint military exercises with Seoul. According to The Japan Times, the decision may have been an attempt to encourage North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to return to the negotiating table.
Trump told reporters in Washington that Kim Jong Un had responded to his appeal. At the same time, North Korea has not publicly confirmed that any contact between the two sides took place. The U.S. president called the reduction in the scale of the exercises a step that would make the situation on the Korean Peninsula “much safer.”
Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, after meeting with his Australian counterpart in Canberra, stated that cooperation between Japan, the U.S., and South Korea is critically important for peace and stability in the region. He drew attention to the growing cooperation between North Korea, the Russian Federation—an aggressor state—and China. Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles, for his part, expressed concern over North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs.

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, according to local media reports, sought to downplay the situation. He emphasized that a strong military alliance with the U.S. strengthens the country’s national security.
Despite Trump’s order, the 11-day Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises began as scheduled on Monday, August 17. Approximately 18,000 South Korean troops are participating alongside U.S. forces. A Pentagon spokesperson told the publication that the U.S. Department of Defense is working to implement the president’s directive but did not specify whether it would affect the current maneuvers or future exercises.
North Korea views the annual exercises as a rehearsal for an invasion, while Seoul and Washington describe them as purely defensive.
