US President Donald Trump held a multilateral meeting with leaders and representatives of Middle Eastern countries in New York, United States, on September 22, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. The leaders of Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Qatar and Turkey took part, as well as officials from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Lebanon, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and other states, the Jerusalem Post reports.

Trump called the countries represented friends, allies and partners of the United States. He spoke about peace and prosperity in the Middle East and also mentioned close relations with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The US president also stated that a recent meeting between US and Iranian representatives had been productive.

Concerns over the conflict with Iran

According to the publication, a number of participants are concerned about the consequences of the conflict with Iran. Iraq has faced a reduction in fuel exports, while Kuwait, Bahrain and the UAE have come under attack. Saudi Arabia, the Jerusalem Post notes, faces threats from the Houthis and has previously been attacked by groups in Iraq.

In speeches at the UN General Assembly, some states also criticized Israel. Jordan’s King Abdullah II expressed concern over violence in the West Bank and Israel’s actions in Syria. The publication writes that Jordan is concerned about instability in southern Syria and has carried out airstrikes to counter drug smuggling which, in Amman’s view, is fueled by networks in Suwayda.

US contacts with countries in the region

The Trump administration maintains contacts with Syria, Iraq and Lebanon, and also supports negotiations between Israel and Lebanon. According to the Jerusalem Post, Washington sells weapons to Gulf countries and is advancing a possible sale of F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia and possibly to Turkey.

US Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack, who also oversees Washington’s policy toward Syria and Iraq as special envoy, reported on September 22 that he had attended an event in New York marking the centennial of the US-Turkey partnership, which took place the previous evening.
