Australia and Japan have agreed to expand their cooperation in the field of military testing. Under the updated agreement, Tokyo will be able to conduct missile launches—including hypersonic ones—at Australian test sites over the next ten years.

According to Marles, the tests will include, among other things, Japan’s hypersonic weapons development program. He emphasized that “our cooperation is based on complete trust.”

It is noted that in May, during Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s visit to Australia, the two countries signed a series of agreements, including ones regarding the testing of new military equipment and weapons.

Tokyo is currently building up its military capabilities, including the development of various types of long-range missiles to counter China’s increasingly powerful military capabilities.

Last year, Japan tested an anti-ship missile in Australia. The two countries are currently cooperating on the development and deployment of new types of weapons.

In addition, Canberra is purchasing Japanese-made naval vessels.

On Tuesday, the Australian government also announced the first test of a prototype laser weapon developed jointly with Japanese companies.

Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles made the announcement after meeting with his Japanese counterpart, Shinjiro Koizumi, in Canberra on Tuesday, according to Bloomberg.
