Japan reported that a Chinese vessel was operating in its exclusive economic zone
The Japanese Coast Guard reported that the Chinese research vessel Dong Fang Hong 2 was spotted in Japan’s exclusive economic zone near Okinawa Prefecture. According to the agency, the vessel was lowering an object resembling a wire into the sea, after which a patrol ship radioed it to cease its activities.
According to The Japan Times, the Dong Fang Hong 2 was spotted at approximately 1:55 p.m. on Sunday, 106 kilometers west of Kume Island. This was reported by the Japan Coast Guard’s 11th Regional Headquarters, based in Naha.

The Coast Guard informed the Chinese vessel that marine research is not permitted without Japan’s consent. On Monday morning, according to the agency, the Dong Fang Hong 2 continued these activities.
The Coast Guard also detected another Chinese vessel, the Xiang Yang Hong 21, in the exclusive economic zone near Kuba Island. It was observed conducting activities around 4:50 p.m. on Saturday; at approximately 10:15 p.m. that same day, the vessel left the area.
