Italy urges the EU to relax budget rules amid the energy crisis — Reuters
Italy has asked the European Commission to ease budget constraints on EU countries due to the sharp rise in energy prices.
This was announced by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.
He proposed applying the same approaches to energy expenditures that are already in place for defense spending, allowing countries to temporarily exceed established deficit limits.
Tajani cited the “national safeguard clause” mechanism, which allows for deviations from budget rules in exceptional circumstances.
According to him, similar exemptions would help governments respond more effectively to the energy crisis.
The minister also noted that Italy’s spending on fuel tax cuts is a temporary measure and should not become a permanent burden on public debt.
