Callas explained why the EU cannot act as a mediator in negotiations with Russia

The European Union cannot act as a neutral mediator in potential peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, as it openly supports the Ukrainian side and defends its own security interests.

This is reported on the EU’s official website.

The EU High Representative noted that it is impossible to act as a mediator and treat the parties equally, since the European Union clearly stands on Ukraine’s side. According to her, the EU should assist the Ukrainian side in these processes but will not attempt to replace the United States in the peace settlement.

Negotiations on the immediate end of the war must take place between Ukraine and Russia, as there are numerous issues that only they can resolve. Even if other countries are involved in shuttle diplomacy, ultimately it is the parties directly involved in the conflict who must sit down at the negotiating table to discuss and resolve these issues.

The European Union has discussed the possible appointment of a special mediator for contacts with Russia, and Angela Merkel is among the leading candidates. Mario Draghi and Alexander Stubb are also being considered, but no final decision has been made yet due to disagreements among diplomats. Some countries view such an initiative as a risky concession to the Kremlin, while others see it as a pragmatic tool amid the diminishing role of the U.S. as the primary mediator.
