US candidate removed from forum after misgendering McBride — The Hill
In Wilmington, Delaware, USA, Republican candidate Joe Arminio was asked to leave the stage at an election forum after he used male forms of address for his opponent, Congresswoman Sarah McBride. This was reported by The Hill.
Moderator's warning
Arminio and McBride are competing for Delaware's at-large seat in the US House of Representatives. During his opening remarks, the Republican incorrectly used male forms in reference to McBride, after which he was interrupted by the audience.
Forum moderator Ken Grant warned Arminio that this was his final warning: if he did not show respect to anyone else on the stage, he would be asked to leave. The candidate acknowledged that he had made a mistake earlier and said it was not his first mistake during the campaign or in life.
Later, while discussing healthcare, Arminio blamed Democratic Senator Chris Coons and McBride for rising costs, calling them Democratic Party “gentlemen.” Following another reaction from the audience, the moderator and event organizers asked him to leave the stage.

McBride's reaction
McBride tried to intervene, saying that she did not want to deprive her opponent of the opportunity to speak, but the moderator interrupted her. Her office referred to a social media post by the politician, in which she said she was proud to represent Delaware and its residents.
McBride also said that she is focused on reducing the cost of gasoline, groceries, housing, childcare and healthcare services. Arminio's campaign did not respond to The Hill's request for comment.
McBride became the first openly transgender member of the US Congress in 2024. In 2025, Republicans Keith Self and Mary Miller also used male forms of address for her during House proceedings.
