Cyprus holds event in Athens on women’s role in shipping — Cyprus Mail
In Athens, Greece, Cyprus held the event “Women — Shipping — Social Contribution,” dedicated to the role of women in the maritime industry and the contribution of the shipping community to society. The meeting was organised by Cyprus’ Deputy Ministry of Shipping ahead of World Maritime Day under the patronage of Cyprus First Lady Philippa Karsera Christodoulides.

As Cyprus Mail reports, the event was attended by Cyprus Deputy Minister of Shipping Marina Hadjimanolis, President of the Cyprus Shipowners’ Union Polis V. Hadjioannou, Cyprus’ Ambassador to Greece Stavros Avgoustidis, as well as representatives of the Greek shipping community.
Hadjimanolis described shipping as one of the key sectors of the Cypriot economy and a community with a significant international presence. According to her, the importance of the industry is not limited to economic indicators and the operation of vessels, as people are at its core.

The industry’s social contribution
The deputy minister stressed the long-standing tradition of charitable and social work by shipping families, shipowners, companies and organisations in Cyprus and Greece. According to her, such support includes foundations, donations, scholarships, sponsorships and other initiatives in healthcare, education, social protection, youth support, culture and the environment.
She also noted that the shipping community has repeatedly provided assistance during crises and natural disasters. Hadjimanolis separately highlighted the role of women — professionals, researchers, seafarers, as well as participants in family and charitable foundations and their own social initiatives.
Cyprus’ first lady stated that the event was an opportunity to honour seafarers and women’s contribution to a demanding sector that is important to the economy and society. Polis Hadjioannou, for his part, said that women not only participate in shipping but also help shape the future of the industry. The meeting took place during Hadjimanolis’ three-day working visit to Athens, which also included meetings with shipping companies and representatives of the maritime industry.
