China ranked 18th in the global education index — ECNS
China ranked 18th in the global education index as of the end of 2025, rising by two positions. The study results were presented in Beijing, ECNS reports.
Four assessment criteria
The index was compiled by the Chinese National Academy of Educational Sciences. It assesses education systems in four areas: equity, quality, the capacity to provide educational services, and sustainable development potential.
The study linked China’s higher position to improvements in the structure of higher education disciplines and programs, growth in research personnel capacity, and an increase in the overall quality of education.

Digital education and artificial intelligence
The results of the 2026 Global Digital Education Development Index were also released. China ranked fourth among 82 countries, also improving its result by two positions compared with the previous year.
According to the index, the United States, China, South Korea, and Finland were among the first to move to a new stage of education using artificial intelligence. In this indicator, the United States ranked first and China second.
