China submits first comprehensive WTO reform document
China has submitted a comprehensive document outlining its position on reforming the World Trade Organization (WTO) structure. This is Beijing’s first official submission since WTO reform efforts began in June 2022, aiming to help developing countries tap into growth opportunities in digital economy, green transition, and artificial intelligence sectors.
The statement affirms China’s commitment to open economic globalization and support for the multilateral trading system. China is one of the key initiators of WTO reforms, having published a preliminary position on the issue in 2018 and formally submitting a proposal in 2019.
This move highlights China’s proactive role in global trade policy and may strengthen the position of developing countries in the global economy. Further discussions among WTO members are expected to follow.
