Kogi declares three days of mourning after Idris’s death — Premium Times Nigeria
Kogi State in Nigeria has declared three days of mourning following the death of former Governor Ibrahim Idris. As Premium Times Nigeria reports, State Governor Ahmed Ododo also ordered the flags of Nigeria and Kogi State to be flown at half-mast on government buildings and in other designated public places throughout the mourning period.
State funeral
The measures were announced on Sunday in a statement by Commissioner for Information and Communications Kingsley Fanwo. State authorities will also hold a state funeral for Idris and will cover the costs and organize the ceremony.
Ibrahim Idris died in the United Kingdom on Sunday at the age of 77. According to the publication, his death was confirmed by his nephew, Shehu Ahmed, after unverified reports appeared on social media. Ahmed Ododo visited the former governor’s residence and expressed condolences to his family members.

Idris’s political career
In a condolence message, the governor called Idris’s death a loss for Kogi State and Nigeria, mentioning his work in public service. Idris, also known as “Ibro,” was the longest-serving governor of Kogi State. He led the state from 2003 until January 2012 as a representative of the People’s Democratic Party, although a later Supreme Court ruling found that his constitutional term had ended earlier.
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, also expressed condolences to Idris’s family, political associates, and the state’s residents. She called him an important figure in the political history of Kogi State and the People’s Democratic Party. At the time of publication, funeral details had not yet been announced.
