Former Antalya mayor sentenced to 46 years in prison — Der Spiegel

A court in Turkey has sentenced Niyazi Nefi Kara, the former mayor of Antalya and a member of the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), to 46 years in prison.

This was reported by Der Spiegel.

He was found guilty of corruption, money laundering, and leading a criminal organization. The former deputy mayor also received a 40-year prison sentence and a fine. In total, more than 40 defendants are involved in the case.

The publication notes that other CHP mayors are also in custody, the most prominent of whom is former Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu.

He faces over 2,000 years in prison. His arrest and removal from office last year sparked massive protests across Turkey, during which about 2,000 people were detained.

The opposition views the persecution of Imamoglu as an attempt to eliminate Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s main potential rival in the 2028 presidential election. Erdogan himself denies interfering in the work of the judicial system.

As a reminder, Erdogan expects that a “peace table” will soon be set in Turkey to end the war.

Also, on July 16, Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was sentenced to one year and eight months in prison for allegedly “threatening” the chief prosecutor of Istanbul.
