Jerusalem Post columnist says support for two-state solution is declining in Israel
In Israel, columnist Avi Abelow wrote in an Jerusalem Post opinion piece that many Israelis will not support the creation of a Palestinian state ahead of the first elections after the events of October 7, 2023. In his view, the two-state solution is not a realistic path to lasting peace.
The columnist’s arguments
Abelow linked his assessment of voter sentiment to the consequences of previous agreements and Israeli withdrawals from territories. He argues that attempts to implement the principle of “land for peace” were accompanied by rocket attacks, the construction of tunnels and terrorist attacks.
The author mentioned the Second Intifada, bus bombings, suicide attacks, as well as Israel’s withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. He believes that Israeli voters will not want to recreate the conditions that, in his wording, existed before October 7, 2023.
The columnist also stated that agreements to end hostilities without eliminating military threats from Hamas and Hezbollah will not ensure Israel’s security. This is the author’s assessment presented in the column, rather than a report on decisions by the Israeli authorities or polling results.

Assessment of the political course
Abelow supported the political course of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In his view, the head of government has begun changing the approach to the Palestinian issue, emphasizing the strengthening of Israel as a Jewish state.
At the same time, the author called this process incomplete and criticized some political, public and religious leaders for adhering to previous diplomatic approaches. He also argues that left-wing parties are trying to outflank Netanyahu from the right during the campaign, although their positions on ending the war, in his view, remain different.
According to Abelow, lasting peace is possible through strengthening Israel’s military and political capacity, rather than through the creation of a Palestinian state.
