Trump’s approval rating in the US rises to 35%, but Democrats lead in poll
In the United States, President Donald Trump’s job approval rating rose to 35% from 33% recorded at the end of August, but Democrats hold an advantage over Republicans in a poll on congressional elections. This is indicated by a Reuters/Ipsos poll reported by Cyprus Mail.
The poll was conducted over four days after the first Republican Party convention in history ahead of the midterm elections. It surveyed 1,143 Americans nationwide, and the margin of error is three percentage points in either direction. The 33% figure recorded in the Reuters/Ipsos poll from August 28 to 31 was the lowest of Trump’s political career.
Democrats’ advantage
When asked which party they would vote for if congressional elections were held now, 44% of respondents chose Democrats and 37% chose Republicans. The seven-percentage-point gap was the largest since Trump returned to the White House in January 2025.

Democrats were also slightly more often named as better managers of the economy: 38% versus 37% for Republicans. According to the poll, Democrats gained such an advantage in the summer for the first time in about a decade.
Payment proposal and construction
Sixty-three percent of Americans did not approve of Trump’s proposal, voiced at the Republican Party convention, to provide a $5,000 dividend payment to all Americans if Republicans retain control of Congress after the November midterm elections. Four in ten Republicans and nine in ten Democrats opposed the idea.
Trump’s construction projects in the US capital, including the construction of a ballroom at the White House, also drew differing reactions depending on party preferences. They were not supported by 91% of Democrats and one in four Republicans. About two-thirds of respondents, including half of Republicans, consider these projects a low priority.
