IRGC commander killed in clash in southeastern Iran — Jerusalem Post
Brigadier General Hossein Zarifi, commander of the IRGC's Shahid Sajjad operational headquarters, was killed in Saravan in southeastern Iran during a clash with armed individuals. The Jerusalem Post reported this, citing Iranian media and a statement by the Quds regional headquarters of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Ground Forces.
Operation near the border with Pakistan
The battle took place in the Jihadabad area of Saravan, near Iran's border with Pakistan. According to the Iranian side, joint forces of the IRGC, the Ministry of Intelligence and police conducted a raid at a location where security forces believed an armed group was operating.
Iranian authorities said that the group was allegedly preparing an attack and that its location had been established through intelligence information. During the shootout, according to Maariv, five members of the group were killed and several others were detained. The affiliation and identities of the armed individuals have not been established. Iranian authorities called them “terrorists” without naming a specific organization; no group has claimed responsibility for the clash.

IRGC statement and previous clashes
The IRGC said that Zarifi was killed while taking part in the operation alongside his forces. The corps also stated that his death would not create a vacuum in the ranks of the security structure and that operations to protect Iran's borders would continue. According to Maariv, he had served in Sistan and Baluchestan province for more than ten years. As follows from an IRGC statement distributed by Tasnim, the general's funeral is scheduled for Friday in Saravan.
On September 12, during another joint operation by the IRGC, the Ministry of Intelligence and law enforcement officers in Saravan, four suspected militants and three members of Iranian security forces were killed, according to the Iranian side. At the end of August, the IRGC also reported the death of one member of an armed group and the detention of six other people in the province.
