Pakistan committee voices concern over law enforcement in rape cases
The National Assembly of Pakistan’s Committee on Human Rights in Islamabad expressed serious concern over the performance of law enforcement agencies in preventing rape and sexual harassment. As Dawn reports, the committee meeting was chaired by lawmaker Syeda Nousheen Iftikhar.
Enforcement of laws and coordination
The committee said law enforcement agencies were performing unsatisfactorily in countering cases of rape and sexual harassment, the number of which, in its assessment, is increasing. Government officials were advised to take strict measures to ensure the proper enforcement of laws.
Parliamentarians also called for coordination with other ministries and departments responsible for protecting human rights in order to improve the effectiveness of this work.

Murder and harassment cases
The meeting discussed the murder cases of Hina Javed and Ayat Noor, as well as a harassment case involving Dr Ayesha. The committee expressed outrage that the perpetrators had not been punished. According to committee members, this happened because of criminal negligence by law enforcement agencies.
The Interior Ministry was instructed to handle these cases effectively in order to bring the perpetrators to justice. The committee also suggested that local parliamentarians in the places where the incidents occurred coordinate with law enforcement agencies to ensure a transparent investigation. Members of the National Assembly and senior officials from relevant ministries and departments attended the meeting.
