Parliamentary Human Rights Committee reviews children's issues in Abuakwa South
The Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights continued its field monitoring and training visit to the Eastern Region, visiting the Abuakwa South Municipality. The focus was on issues affecting the rights and well-being of children, MyJoyOnline reports.
Meetings with local authorities
During the visit, committee members and their partners paid a courtesy call on the municipal chief executive and met with representatives of the Abuakwa South Municipal Assembly. They discussed children's rights and protection issues.
The topics discussed included education, illegal mining, and teenage pregnancy. Participants considered how these issues affect the safety, development, and future opportunities of children in the municipality.

Community issues
The committee and its partners also visited the Kwesi-Komfo community, where they met with the chief and traditional leaders before discussing children's issues with local residents.
Among the key issues raised during these meetings were child labour, teenage pregnancy, and the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme. Stakeholders exchanged views on practical steps to strengthen child protection.
The committee stressed the need for closer cooperation among local authorities, traditional leaders, parents, communities, parliament, and development partners. It also emphasized the importance of an environment that protects the rights, well-being, and development of children and young people.
