László György Lukács, the leader of the parliamentary faction of the Hungarian Jobbik party, has withdrawn his candidacy from the election in single-member constituency No. 3, scheduled for April 12.
This was reported by Telex.
According to the National Election Commission, the politician’s status has been changed to “withdrawn,” confirming his decision not to participate in the race.
Lukács is now the third Jobbik representative to withdraw from the election. Earlier, similar decisions were made by Gábor Staudt and István Földi, who stated that he did so in support of the strongest opposition force—the Tisa Party.
It is noted that this time, for the first time in 20 years, Jobbik did not submit a nationwide list of candidates, focusing instead on supporting individual opposition contenders.
Currently, 47 candidates from the party remain in the race. Jobbik, which previously positioned itself as a far-right force, has transformed in recent years into a pro-European center-right party and has become an opponent of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
Additionally, the Hungarian opposition promises to investigate Szijjártó’s ties to Russia.
The EU has restricted Hungary’s participation in secret negotiations.
