Fuksas's "Pipes," which have become a symbol of the Saakashvili architectural era, will be demolished in Tbilisi

The Tbilisi City Hall has issued a permit to demolish the futuristic “Fuksas Pipes” complex, which is considered one of the most famous architectural symbols of Mikheil Saakashvili’s presidency. A hotel complex is planned to be built on the site of the unfinished structure.

According to Interpressnews, the decision was made in accordance with a Georgian government resolution dated May 6, 2025, which provides for the development of the site with the construction of a hotel and authorizes demolition work.

According to 1TV.ge, the city hall’s architectural department issued the permit following a positive recommendation from the Council for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, which includes representatives of the city government and the Georgian Ministry of Culture.

The complex, known as the “Fuksas Pipes,” was designed by Italian architect Massimiliano Fuksas as a music and exhibition center. Construction began in 2011 during Mikheil Saakashvili’s presidency, but the project was put on hold after the “Georgian Dream” party came to power. Since then, the building has remained unfinished for over ten years.

In 2022, the complex was purchased by businessman David Khidasheli, who stated his intention to preserve the architectural concept and convert the building into a museum, exhibition halls, and conference rooms. However, the project was never implemented.

In the spring of 2025, the property changed hands. Following this, the terms of privatization were amended, allowing for the demolition of the complex and the construction of a hotel in its place.
