Lithuanian court convicts man for desecrating the Ukrainian flag — LRT
A court in Lithuania has convicted Lukas Vaichekonis, a resident of the Pasvalys district, of committing a series of offenses against Ukrainian symbols and the property of refugees.
This was reported by LRT.
For the aggregate of his crimes, the man was sentenced to 90 days in prison, marking a logical conclusion to this high-profile case.
The investigation established that in June 2024, the defendant stole the Ukrainian national flag from a law enforcement building in the city of Panevėžys.
Afterward, the perpetrator attacked a car with Ukrainian license plates, smashing its windows and thrusting the stolen flag inside.
“During the investigation, the man admitted his guilt and explained his actions by citing a negative attitude toward Ukrainian refugees and Lithuania’s support for Ukraine,” the case materials state.
Such motives confirm the intentional nature of the crime, aimed at undermining social harmony.
The court found Vaičekonis guilty under several articles of the Criminal Code.
Specifically, these include public desecration of a symbol of a foreign state, direct incitement to hatred, and gross violation of public order.
For the aforementioned incident involving the flag and the car, the man was sentenced to 50 days of detention. However, taking into account the unserved portion of his previous sentence, the final punishment was increased to 90 days of actual imprisonment.
In addition to serving his prison sentence, the convicted man is required to pay substantial financial compensation. The court ordered him to pay over 2,000 euros to the owner of the damaged car to cover the damages.
As a reminder, the President of Lithuania warned that the country cannot be an “island of safety.”
